Sportsmates are the main characters of Nintendo Switch Sports. They are the players' customizable avatars that are used to play all 8 sports.
Sportsmates are genderless in the sense that there are no gender settings in "Customize", they are never referred to with pronouns in-game (except in titles), and they can wear any unlocked clothing.
Customization[]
Players can customize their Sportsmate and have plenty of options to do so.
Face & Hairstyle[]
Face[]
When a player clicks on "Face & Hairstyle" in the customization editor, the first thing that pops up is a menu that shows 6 different facial types. They can also choose between body color and eye color in this section.
Hair[]
When a player clicks on "Face & Hairstyle" in the customization editor and clicks on the second tab, a menu will pop up showing hair types that the player can choose from. The default hairstyles are Long 'n' Wavy, Slicked Back, Bun, Short Locs, Wavy Bob, and Fade. Names may vary depending on the region of the game. Just like with the "Face" menu, there are several different hair color types the player can choose from.
Eyebrows[]
When a player clicks on "Face & Hairstyle" in the customization editor and clicks on the third tab, a menu will pop up, showing 6 variations of eyebrows the player can choose from. For the default eyebrow types, they are all different combinations of one another, there being 5 of them. Thick, Thin, Arching, Straight, and Drooping. The color of the eyebrows is not entirely customizable, as the color of their ties in with what hair color you chose.
Face Add-ons[]
When a player clicks on "Face & Hairstyle" in the customization editor and clicks on the fourth tab, a menu will pop up showing at least 4 add-ons they can add to their face. The default face addons are Freckles, Fake Beard (Black), Eye Shadows (Pink), and Flushed Cheeks.
Outfits & Accessories[]
Clothing[]
When a player clicks on "Outfits & Accessories" in the customization editor, the first thing that pops up is a menu showing at least 8 clothing items. The default clothing items are all variations of an outfit named "Official Gear". These 8 variations of Official Gear are all just different colors of it, and the colors available are Magenta, Orange, Lime Green, Ivory, Green, Blue, Purple, and Brown.
Headwear[]
When a player clicks on "Outfits & Accessories" in the customization editor and clicks on the second tab, they will see the headwear that they own. If they own none, it will simply say, "No items of this type." There is no default headwear.
Eyewear[]
When a player clicks on "Outfits & Accessories" in the customization editor and clicks on the third tab, they will see the eyewear that they own. If they own none, it will simply say, "No items of this type." There is no default eyewear.
Face Accessories[]
When a player clicks on "Outfits & Accessories" in the customization editor and click on the fourth tab, they will see the face accessories they currently own. If they own none, it will simply say, "No items of this type." There are no default face accessories available.
Body[]
You can also choose to use a Mii and any unlocked body instead of a Sportsmate body. Sportsmates can be fully customized, Miis can only change outfits, and unlocked bodies can only change outfits and eyewear.
CPU Sportsmates[]

CPU Sportsmates will appear in Local Play and sometimes in Online Play if other players are taking too long to join. They also appear as your teammates when going against a CPU Mii.
