Volleyball is one of the 8 sports currently in Nintendo Switch Sports, and one of the 3 newly introduced sports.
Overview[]
The goal of Volleyball is to score 5 points by hitting the ball into the other team's court. It is a teamwork-centered sport, where you both need to work together to score. Each team has 2 players.
Moves[]
Serve[]
Hit the ball at the beginning of the turn. Starting from version 1.2.0, Rocket Serves can be done by hitting the ball at its peak. In online matches, there is a circa 10-second shot clock for serves; if the timer runs out, the player serves automatically.
When facing northwest towards the city (The default direction in online matches), a Rocket Serve can usually be done while the ball has reached up to the purple line in the screenshot on the right. The roof steel bars can be used as orientation for this.
Bump[]
Hit the ball to your teammate, to let them set.
Set[]
Hit the ball straight up, to your teammate, letting them spike.
Spike[]
Jump up and hit the ball into the other team's court. You can also do a quick spike by jumping just before your teammate sets the ball. Starting from version 1.2.0, Slide Attacks can be done by moving the control stick left and right after bumping the ball. The words "Slide Attack" will appear on top of the player's head and they will move to one side of the court before spiking if done correctly.
In contrast to in tennis (as well as to in real-life volleyball), the ball virtually never goes directly off-bounds on a spike, so players are free to spike as hard and wide as they wish to.
Block[]
Block a spike by lifting the Joy-Con. You can use the control stick to move around while doing this. To block Slide Attacks, move towards the opponent getting ready to spike the ball.
Scoring[]
Each time the ball hits the ground in one team's court, the other team gets a point. Similarly to Tennis, if both teams are tied and one point is needed for either team to score, a Deuce occurs, where either team needs to score 2 more points without being scored on to win. If the score reaches 6-6, the one who gains the next point will win.
Tips[]
- Timing is very important, as if you are too early the spike will be weak, and if you are perfect, the window to react to the ball will be smaller.
- Don't overlook blocking, as a good block can mess up the other team's spike, or possibly even score.
- It is nevertheless very common to be paired online with teammates (or opponents, for that matter) who won't even try to block most incoming balls while near the net, with the reasoning for the teammates doing so being unknown.
- On the other hand, if you're paired with opponents who are really good at blocking, and they seem to block every ball your team tries to spike, hitting the ball with Very Early timing will usually lob it above their blocks.
- Balls that veer very wide (for instance from failed blocks), can occasionally go where there's normally potted plants or benches that surround the court, which temporarily become invisible while the ball is there. Balls that veer even further away, can be seen disappearing in a poof cloud.
- Various Reddit users have recommended blocking slighty off-aligned with the spiking opponent, to have a higher chance of the ball deflecting in a specific direction.
